Konark Sun Temple – One of India’s seven wonders
Konark sun temple situated in the north eastern corner of Puri (Orissa) is a prime spot for the tourists and pilgrims in India. The Konark sun temple has derived its name from two Sanskrit words, Kona means corner and Arka means sun. It is dedicated to the God of Sun. At the present, even after so many years, it still reflects the explicit talent and the genius of the ancient artisans. The temple is one of the most renowned temples in Hindustan and is a world heritage site. It is also one of the seven wonders in India.
Konark sun temple was built in the 13th century by the Ganga king Narasimha Deva. It displays a golden chariot with twelve pairs of wheels on either side which is dragged by flaunting horses. A pair of lion crushing the elephants can also be found at the entrance of the temple. The construction of this temple was properly envisioned and skilfully executed. A very interesting story (as described by the local legends) was the cause for the construction of this temple.
Samba, a royal king of that time was cursed by lord Krishna to leprosy for entering into the bathing chamber of his wife. He was supposed to worship the god of sun if he wants to recover from his leprosy, in the north east part of Puri. Samba, then reached the Koniditya district where Konark temple is originally situated and worshipped the sun god and ultimately he was freed from the curse. Samba, in order to show his gratitude to the god of sun laid the foundation of the Konark temple.
The paintings on the wall of the Konark temple are what will lure you. The intricate drawings of the animals, foliage, men, and warriors on horses are so implicit that you can’t take your eyes away from them. Not many temples you will find in the world with such a grand architectural excellence. Konark temple is also accompanied by the Jagmohan temple. The Jagmohan temple has been embroidered with precious jewels. You will also find the characters giving a highly erotic expression. The stone work of the Konark Temple is unique on its own. Most of tourists appreciate the three images of the sun god which has been carved in such a manner so as to receive the sunrays at dawn, noon and sunset. It will be a sensational experience for you to see that moment and it can’t be explained in words.
Great Konark Sun temple along with Puri and Bhubaneshwar constitute the “travelling triangle” in Orissa. Millions of local and international tourists visit this place every year. Mayadevi temple and Vaishnav temple situated on the Konark Campus will also display the rich historical heritage of India.
