Naminan Fruit
Today is the January 1st of 2012. So at first, I wish you a happy new year. As a new year gift, today I’m going to tell you about a fruit. This fruit is not common in everywhere. I travelled to several countries, but couldn’t find this fruit except in Sri Lanka. I even don’t know how to call this fruit in English. Naminan is the Sri Lankan word for it. So, let’s get to know about this rare fruit. Maybe one day you can taste it by yourself.
The picture below shows you a medium size Naminan tree and as you can see, fruits are not on the top part of the tree as most of other trees have. The special thing here is Naminan tree has its fruits mostly nearby the roots – bottom part of the tree or on the tree trunk. This makes easier for you to pluck them and eat even the tree is tall. At the present, these Naminan trees are very rare in Sri Lankan cities, but not impossible to find. However, if you go to southern part villages or country sides, you will find plenty of Naminan trees and you can eat as much as you like.
If we talk about the taste of Naminan fruit, it has three different tastes. When the fruit is not ripe at all, it has a very bitter taste and at this time its colour is dark green. After a week or so, it becomes light green and sour taste. In this stage, it is possible for you to eat and at last it becomes some kind of colour mixed with yellow and green. Now it is ripe enough and sweet. This is the best time to taste it. You need to eat it carefully because inside of the fruit has a big seed. Make sure that you don’t swallow it.
I think now you got enough information about this rare fruit. In Sri Lanka, you can’t find Naminan at fruit shops because as I said above, it is not common. So if you want to taste it, you probably have to find a tree. It is also possible that you may find Naminan fruit in India as well. You also have to remember that, before you eat it, need to wash properly with soap. The surface of the fruit can be dirty because it is located nearby the tree roots.
